weekend miscellany

I just did the best thing ever.  I got a foot massage.  I went into one of those Korean Lady Nail Salons (there's at least one on every block, all called something like "Nail Palace" or "Pearl Nail"--the one I patronized was called "Nail Story 2") and asked for a pedicure, minus the actual pedicure.  And that's how I got 20 minutes of sweet, sweet foot rub.  It was so awesome, I'm definitely going again.

JOE
Wait, what do you mean "it was the best thing ever"?

MICHELLE
I mean it was the best thing.  EVER.

JOE
Better than the foot massage I gave you?

MICHELLE
Ye--no!  NO!  Not better than your foot massage!  Just...more professional.
And longer.  And with pretty smelling oils and moisturizers.  And wrapping
with steamy hot towels after.  Yeah, OK, it was better.

My feet started hurting again pretty soon after I left the place, though.  Also, I got some shoe inserts from Foot Locker, but they don't seem to be working that well.  Maybe I need to go see a podiatrist.

So I finally got some physical documentation from my residency program--aside from the flurry of e-mails from next year's chief residents, I was starting to worry that I hadn't actually been accepted after all.  So what that means is piles of happy paperwork for me.  Mostly of the filling in addresses and check box variety, though.  "Have you ever been convicted of a felony?  If the answer is YES, please give the name, address, and phone number of your parole officer in the space designated below."

The good thing about all this is that I'm staying within the same institution, a real blessing for someone as fearful of academic bureaucracy as I.  I still have to do the paperwork, and send for documentation, but it's almost all internal, and at least I already know which offices I need to go to demand stuff from, and the names of the people that work there.  And which ones have candy dishes on their desks.

There was a street fair down Broadway yesterday, so we took a stroll down to buy cheap toothbrushes and eat grilled corn on the cob.  We also had a number of small celebrity sightings, including Amy Jo Johnson (who plays pointy Julie on "Felicity") and Cynthia Nixon (who I was totally just talking about the other day) with her family.  I love celebrities who live in New York instead of pansy-ass L.A.  It gives them street cred.
