hotels across america

Hey, you know what I just found out?  That Cynthia Nixon (the red-headed one on "Sex and the City") went to my high school.  Wow, she and Young M.C. both.  Remember "Bust a Move?"  You want it, you got it, you want it, baby you got it (now bust a move!).  And also Irulan from the Real World, who my friend Andy can't believe was actually a Hunter alum, because, like, she be acting so dumb on the show.  Such a motley crew of semi-stars and personalities.

This morning was a hotel reservation extravaganza.  We're heading out to California for a wedding Memorial Day weekend, and to Denver in June for yet another wedding, so we had to set up lodging for both events.  Also, we had to book a hotel room in New York for the night of the wedding.  I know, we already live here, but if we actually came home to our apartment after the wedding, I think that we would have a strong inclination to change into sweats, plop on the couch, and fall asleep watching "MTV Cribs."  This would not be very romantic.  So...hotel room it is.

We picked a really cute B&B in Carmel for the first wedding.  I've never stayed at a B&B before, but all the pictures look so quaint, and come on, it's in Carmel, how could you go wrong?  Oh, and did I mention that when we called to check availability, the lady who picked up the phone was in the middle of cooking breakfast for all the guests?  It's so cozy, you could just plotz.  Just as long as there are no forced group activities or "bonding" sessions with other guests (à la Sorority Life, my new favorite/most loathed show on television) it will be a sweet ride.  And how awesome to go to someone else's wedding, so that we can enjoy the event yet not have to worry about any of the details.  And maybe we'll get to see Clint Eastwood in Carmel.  He's the mayor of the town, you know, as well as the most sun-damaged man alive.  His face is so weather-beaten and craggy that I fear he may actually be transforming into a leather saddle.  (Watch out, Harrison Ford, you're next.)

What should I wear to this wedding, though?  It's supposed to be semi-formal, but it's also going to be on a lawn, so they said, "don't wear heels."  I do not have any shoes that are semi-formal and not heels.  It's sneakers, clogs, or heels, people.
I suppose I could borrow a pair of flats from, like, my mom or something, but I really don't like flats.  I am too short to wear flats.  Maybe if I were a short little ballerina, I could pull it off, but otherwise, it is somewhat of a dumpy look for me.  Maybe I'll go glamorously barefoot.

The hotels in Denver (wedding #2) were surprisingly expensive, considering they were in, you know, Denver.  It's not even ski season anymore.  I really, really wanted to stay at the hotel that was the inspiration for "The Shining," but that was way out of our price range, so we ended up booking a room at this tiny B&B that has only four rooms.  It's nice, though, with the requisite patchwork quilting and wicker furniture.  No hot tub, but really big shower with a skylight.  And it's right in Estes Park, which is I guess this big nature reserve.  I lied when I said it was in Denver, it's actually an hour away, in a place so rural it's going to send me into culture shock.  There may be moose rutting outside our window.

Thank god I start getting paychecks in July.  Between the hotels and the travel and the dog and the general stuff of life (groceries, laundry, pretty underwear) I'm broke as a joke.
