game, set, match
Ooh, much big news since last time. Biggest news of all, probably, is that I found out today that I matched at my first choice Pediatrics residency program, and will in fact be training for the next three years at the institution where I'm currently a medical student. It was such good news, after a long stretch of not-so-good news, and I'm just thrilled.
So many of my classmates matched at our home institution (the mother ship, if you will) that I feel as though residency is just going to be one giant extension of medical school. Except we get paid now. It's just so fun to think that one day on the wards, I could call for an Ortho consult, and whoop, along comes Guillem. Or that I might need a Neuro consult, and in swoops Jack. Heck, or that I could be in the ER, see a kid with a possible corneal abrasion, and call my own husband in as the Ophtho consult. Knowing the institution so well, along with the doctors and housestaff that I'll be working with, makes this whole transition such a friendly one, much less frightening and more exciting.
We're going to be doctors. Can you fucking believe that?
In other news, wedding planning is coming right along. We had our "tasting" with the caterers last week, which is basically this appointment where they shove all kinds of food in front of you in order to help you choose the menu for the reception. Damn, was there a lot of food. I didn't have much of an appetite (see: post-appy) but still, I shoved it on down. Everything they gave us was fantastic, but my favorites were the hors d'oeuvres. So cute. There were these duck summer rolls with dipping stuff, and these little smoked salmon layer-y things, and chicken-on-a- stick with chutney, and these little puff pastry deals that were all so tiny and fun, I could have eaten a whole tray. Joe, uncharacteristically being more discriminating palate, nixed the chicken on a stick and these little mini-pierogi things in favor of other, fancier nibblings (eel maki, phyllo dough purses with portobello and brie, etc.), but I would have said yes to anything they stuck in front of me. Spam cubes with toothpicks? Bring it on!
I did have the re-schedule a few things, though, owing to the whole medical quagmire in which we were ensconced for the past month. Mainly, I had to reschedule my wedding dress fittings, since I lost so much weight in the hospital that any alterations to my current body shape would be meaningless. I'm working hard on gaining the weight back, but it's harder than I thought it would be. But it does create a fun little situation. Not that I never used to really watch what I ate anyway, but it's quite a different feeling to gear one's diet specifically towards gaining weight. To look at a menu and deliberately choose the most calorie-dense entrée. To shop for snack foods with a true sense of purpose, not just indulgence. To eat half a pan of brownies in one sitting and have your entire family cheer you on. Today I bought a big bag of potato chips, a box of Famous Amos chocolate cookies, and a package of Crunch 'n' Munch, and I mean to get though all three before the week is over.
