thank god almighty, i'm cool at last
I love this little film project that I've set myself to. Between catching up on movies that I wanted to see (and not only in theaters--I just rented and watched the Margret Cho stand-up compendium) and catching up on my reading, I feel a little bit like a regular person again, with interests outside of medicine. Damn, next thing you know, I'll be going to the museum or some such mind-enriching thing.
"Far From Heaven" was amazing, as I knew it would be. The sets! The music! The story! And the performances! Will someone please give Julianne Moore some kind of award? For anything. Please. Also, on a shallower note, I wish that 50's couture would come back into style, because how hot are those dresses? I want crinolines too. I'll wear them under my jeans, if I have to.
Joe and I both have the day off (for MLK) so he's out there now, re-finishing the front step of our balcony, or something Bob Villa-ish like that. He wasn't actually sure if he had today off until fairly late last night, though I was almost certain that he did.
MICHELLE You have to have the day off. It's Martin Luther King's birthday! It's a holiday!
JOE Yeah, but the department where I work might not see it that way.
MICHELLE Who do you work for, Trent Lott?
JOE No, I mean that it might not count as an off day for medical students.
MICHELLE Look, if we got the day off for MLK during our medicine rotation last year, you'll get it off for this stupid elective you're on. Medicine is king, it sets the precedent.
JOE We'll see.
MICHELLE And if they make you work, just tell them that they're racists.
JOE Yeah, that'll go over well.
But it turns out he didn't have to work after all.
I'm still reeling from Fun Times With Kids this weekend. Joe's sister told me that before bedtime last night, K pulled out an adult paperback from her parent's bookshelf, and announced, "Every time Aunt Michelle lies down in bed, she's reading a book, so I'm going to do that now too." I can't believe it. Someone finally thinks I'm cool! This makes up for all six years of elementary school right there.
