colons and rectums and bowels, oh my

I'm on the Colorectal team.  But it's OK.  It turns out that I don't really mind that much.  At least, not so far.  In fact, I actually traded away an easier team assignment to get onto Colorectal.  I don't want to get into the details too much, but let's say that working my ass off for five weeks on Colorectal would be the lesser of two evils.

I'm on the team with Chris, who is in the minority in our rotation group, in that he actually wants to be a surgeon.  I, however, really don't care much for Surgery, and would really rather this whole rotation be over sooner rather than later.  So I told him that I'd make him look really good.  Not that I'm dumb or bumbling or anything, nor would I deliberately try to project that image, but I
would
go out of my way to shine Chris up for the surgeons.  I will point out good things that he's done.  I will speak of him glowingly.  I will push him into the limelight.  In exchange, Chris will agree to throw himself on the grenades and scrub in on the eight-hour-plus cases.  It's a nice symbiosis we have going on so far.

Tonight I have to read about small bowel obstruction, diverticulitis, appendectomies, and colon cancer.  It's a lot of reading, but I'm just so glad to be out of the hospital while the sun is still up, at least on the first day of the rotation.  Tomorrow, we're rounding "late," since one of our usual attendings is on vacation--meaning I'll probably roll in to the hospital at 5:00am.

It's going to be a long month.
