Save the Date
So now that everyone to whom we mailed these "Save the Date" cards has received them (even my sister, who lives in the wilds of Massachusets and apparently only gets mail via Pony Express) I can show the design up here. Behold.
Joe and I found this retro Coke ad on the internet, and he Photoshopped our heads in there, adding the text with our names, the date, and the location. And did I mention that the card is a magnet? We found these magnet sheets at Staples and printed out these little business card-sized reminders for people to stick on their refrigerators.
(I got the idea from Martha Stewart. Only she suggested that people put a picture of the church on the magnet instead. We defy you, Martha!)
We thought it would be funny to make our Save the Date cards out of this old, Eisenhower-era Coke ad. The other young folk who have received the magnets seem to like the idea too. Older people, however, don't seem to quite get it, often asking things like, "where did you two find that car?" and "Joe, I didn't know you had a suit like that."

[And in answer to Jason, who e-mailed me yesterday, the Bikini Briefs section is where I put extra stuff that doesn't fit into the regular entry. Sometimes "extra musings," as you put it, other times links, reading suggestions, recipes, etc. When I have nothing extra to say, I leave out the section entirely. I guess I never really explained the whole Bikini Briefs concept that well. Especially since they really haven't been that brief of late.] |

it's white and stuff
So I chose my wedding dress. It's gorgeous.
Originally, I was torn between two of yesterday's choices, liking aspects of each but wishing each one could incorporate the positive details of the other, to create some sort of monstrous chimera-dress. One had a gorgeous tailored neckline and a beautifully fitting front, though I wasn't quite sure that I liked the detail in the back, which was split to reveal this sort of pleated organza fabric underneath. The second had the sort of design I'd had in mind from the beginning, a streaming ribbon sash down the back of the skirt, but was made out of a different kind of fabric that somehow didn't seem to fit my body as well. After trying and re-trying and re-re-trying the two for about half an hour, the saleswoman ("consultant") suggested one other dress for me to try on, that was in some ways a compromise between the two. It was made out of the better-fitting fabric of the first ("more structure" she said, whatever that means), but still had a similar back-sash detail to the second dress.
When I tried it on, I knew it was right. My mom was there and even she agreed totally that This Was It. Possibly it was because she was late for work and wanted me to make a decision, but I don't think so. It's beautiful and flow-y and it fits perfectly, even off the rack. It turns out that I came to Vera Wang at the right time, since they have their new Spring 2003 line in the store now, but only for a few days, before the gowns get shipped off to these "trunk shows" all around the country. (Why they don't have more than one of each dress design, I have no clue.) But the good thing about trying on the dresses for the exhibition is that they're cut very small. I am a scrawny person, and I could try on these dresses with no pinning or clipping at all. I guess the models they use for these shows wear my size, although they're about a foot taller than me, which makes them rather freaky. But it's nice to try on a dress and not have to imagine how it's going to look after extensive alterations.
It's nice to have found a dress, period.
So we ordered the dress, and the consultant bustled around with all the paperwork, stopping in the dressing room to take my measurements. I've never been measured for anything before. It didn't take that long, since they just really measure your boobs, waist, and hips, but still, it felt like it took a long time, since I was standing around in my underwear. So apparently, by boob measurement is 31 and a half inches. And all this time, I thought I wore a 34A. I don't know why I thought I did, I just kind of guessed that I was. But now it's been confirmed that my breasts are, in fact, freakishly, off-the-charts small. Maybe they shrunk.
The worst part is the half inch. It's like how I tell people that I'm 5'2" AND A HALF, just to maximize my height, like, "hey, I may be short, but at least I'm not 5'2"! Because damn, then I'd be a midget! 5'2" and a half is practically 5'3", isn't it?" 31 and a half inches around. Sigh. It's possible that I could be a very undernourished boy.
Sometimes I fantasize about having large, pillowy bosoms a la Britney Spears, but now it comforts me to know that bigger boobs just wouldn't look as good in this dress I just picked out.
