You know what really surprised me today? That the neurosurgeons were so nice. I don't know what I was expecting--blustery pompus asses with God complexes most probably, given their reputation-- but instead, everyone from junior resident to senior attending was really friendly and happy and interested in teaching. At one point, we walked into an OR for a case, and the resident greeted us with a smile, asked us our names, asked us if we had eaten lunch yet (we had), and told us to go take a coffee break, because "nothing exciting is going to happen until then, and I don't want for you guys to feel like you have to stand around, bored out of your minds. Come back in half an hour." We were so happy, we were about to nominate him for resident of the year. Of course, one could interpret something pathetic in our overwhelming joy and awe at any morsel of kindness thrown our way from those higher up in the hierarchy (read: everyone). We're like abused puppies or something. We don't quite trust people, but show us a little love, and we'll glom onto you and never let go.
You know what my new thing is? Oatmeal. I've been eating breakfast more these days out of necessity, and in the process of dabbling in a meal I have traditionally ignored, I've discovered that oatmeal is good. I think I didn't like oatmeal in the past because when my mom used to make it, she would just serve it to me straight up, and it would be all warm and oat-y and that disturbing mixture of textures--both watery and lumpy. It would be like a steaming bowl of vomit, basically, and sensation of it slipping down your throat didn't really persuade me away from that notion. So all my life, I thought that oatmeal was bad. Only recently have I discovered that people actually put stuff in oatmeal. Like brown sugar. You can add sugar to oatmeal! And it makes it taste good! Another good thing to add: cinnamon! Cinnamon and sugar! Two great tastes that taste great together! Some people add raisins too, but I don't like raisins. But anyway, my point is this: if you think you don't like oatmeal, try it again but try stirring brown sugar or other yummy tasting things in there. It will make your oatmeal taste good by association.
I can't believe it's almost May. What ever happened to April?
